THE HULA CIRCLE
About this painting Karen says, "The Hula Circle is the name given to an arc of 130-year old Italian cypress trees alongside what was once called the 'King's Cottage', now the Tedeschi Winery tasting room. At the right time of day, the circle still seems to resonate with an aura from the hula ceremonies performed for King David Kalakaua, who would stay in the cottage when he visited the Rose Ranch in the late 1860's."

OLD TASTING ROOM
"While walking on the grounds at the Tedeschi Winery, the 140-year old building that was formerly used as a tasting room created a beautiful backdrop for the old fountain that is no longer in use. I thoroughly enjoy the winery grounds at Ulupalakua Ranch because the intense colors and light present a visual challenge for any artist to capture. With a little imagination, I could see the fountain as it may once have appeared..."

HALEAKALA RANCH
"Several old buildings like these remain on what was once Haleakala Ranch land in Keokea. Since 1888 the ranch has raised beef and dairy cattle, grown sugar cane and pineapple, on what is now 'only' 32,000 of the most picturesque acres imaginable. The buildings that have survived could have been built anywhere in cattle country, but here on Maui they evoke the old paniolo traditions as well as the mystery of time."
